The Masters 2019 Preview
The biggest event in golf is The Masters, and this is the tournament that everyone wants to win. Set on the idyllic Augusta National course, a place that creates the perfect amphitheatre for what is four tremendous days of golf. Patrick Reed took home the title last year, he comes back again looking to double up this week. Plenty of others appear to have good chances though, but will it be a new name or a returning one taking home The Masters green jacket on Sunday evening?
McIlroy’s Best Chance
It is no surprise to see Rory McIlroy as the favourite to take home a green jacket this week. A win here would complete the major grand slam in his career, winning all of them before he is 30. The Irishman has come agonisingly close before, is this his year?
There is talk suggesting that this is his best ever chance to win the tournament and it is hard to go against that. He is playing great golf right now, but that is not because he is in form, it is simply because he is right in his prime. He’s done a lot of work on the mental side of the game, and his striking ability has followed after that.
There is no doubt he is a deserving favourite, and one that has every chance of going close this week.
Can Fowler Shake the Monkey off His Back?
No one wants to be tagged as the best golfer to never win a major, but unless Rickie Fowler does something about that over the next few years, he is certainly going to be up there on that list. The American played brilliant golf last year, but couldn’t peg back Reed, who was sublime. His scores were good enough to have won many of the previous editions of this tournament and something about the course and the atmosphere seems to bring out the best in him.
There are few in the field more deserving of winning this, Fowler has the game, he has the experience and he certainly has the hunger to go close. He is my pick to win it, and once he wins one major, don’t be surprised to see him go on and win another soon after.
