Andrew Conway: ‘Authentic’ Caelen Doris best option to succeed O’Mahony as Ireland captain
Former Irish rugby union player Andrew Conway has told NewBettingOffers.co.uk that there are a few names he’d expect to see thrown into the hat to succeed Peter O’Mahony once his time is up as Ireland captain – and current number eight Caelen Doris, and lock James Ryan top the list.

Caelan Dorris the pick of the bunch to take over from O’Mahony
Conway feels the balance of a calm nature and an awareness of when to ignite the burners on the pitch puts Dorris in prime position for future captaincy.
Caelan Dorris is that new breed of rugby player in the sense that he’s very calm and relaxed but gets to business when he’s on the pitch. He’s able to balance those sides of himself really well.
He’s also very authentic and he’s just got that relaxed style. It doesn’t always work for players at the top level of performance, but for him it does. He’s been in the leadership group in camp for a couple of years now and I think he’d be a really good option to succeed O’Mahony.
James Ryan has captained Ireland a number of times and although he hasn’t been starting this campaign, the value he adds to the Ireland team can’t be ignored. He’d also be a really good option. James Ryan is someone who is really important going forward, his age profile and experience level warrant his name to be involved in that conversation when the time comes.
Jack Crowley’s progression is frightening.
Praise was also given to fellow countryman Jack Crowley who, despite the pressure of taking over the jersey from Irish legend Johnny Sexton, has been going from strength to strength with frightening progress.
Jack Crowley has been brilliant. He has been really, really good considering the fact he’s taken over the jersey from Johnny Sexton who wore it for the last 12 years. He’s been outstanding and I think the recent loss at Twickenham will prove beneficial. Despite losing I think he had a really good game, he didn’t let himself down in any way.
I think he’s a young man who is going to keep growing and get better and better. I remember training with him around two and half years ago and to see how he’s progressed since then is frightening! He’s an unbelievable professional and he cares about what he does so much and believes in himself.
I’m surprised at how much he’s improved and how good he has become in such a short space of time and fair play to him, I hope he continues to surprise me! If he continues to work as hard as he does, stays on this trajectory I think he’ll be a special player.
Tadhg Beirne deserves more credit, he’s one of the best in the world
When talking about players that could be branded as ‘underrated’, Tadhg Beirne is one who doesn’t get the plaudits he should, despite performing to a high level week in week out for Ireland.
One player who I don’t think gets the credit he deserves is Tadhg Beirne. I just think he is absolutely incredible. To be playing at that high of a level every week in terms of how he applies himself and how he has grown his game, he deserves so much credit. If you see him in his blue scrum cap going for a poach, he knows the nearest three guys in the opposition are going to go in there and try and kill him – and he’s still there every time!
I think Tadhg has proven himself to be a properly elite and world-class. He’s one of the best second rows in the world and that progression started over the last three or four years. He’s special.
