Premier League Treble - 17th - 18th Aug
The Premier League came back last weekend with a full set of fixtures and we are now looking forward to the second games of the new season. Again, we have a full fixture list to look forward to, with televised games on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
The big game of the weekend comes on Saturday, live on Sky Sports. Champions Manchester City host Tottenham in what should be a very lively, end to end game. Both teams have immense quality, especially when it comes to attacking and that should give us a game full of chances.
City came back with a comfortable success over West Ham last weekend, beating The Hammers 5-0 at the Olympic Stadium. It wasn’t as easy for Tottenham and they had to come from behind to beat newly promoted Aston Villa, a game they eventually won 3-1, but it was far too close for comfort.
One thing we saw last weekend was that both teams have the ability to score, with eight goals between them. We fancy that to continue this weekend, we are backing both teams to score in this one.
A team we have just mentioned, Aston Villa, are the second pick this weekend. They performed with real credit against Tottenham last weekend before eventually being overpowered. The Villains are in calmer waters this weekend with a home game against Bournemouth in what looks to be a great chance for them to get some points on the board.
Bournemouth failed to really pull up any trees last weekend in their home game against Sheffield United, a game they were expected to win. This is another game against a newly promoted team but a much tougher test based on what we saw from Villa last weekend. We’re backing the home side to get off the mark here and beat Bournemouth.
The final game to look at this weekend is in South Yorkshire on Sunday and features newly promoted Sheffield United and Crystal Palace. This game could well be one for the purists, it looks as though we are going to see a very tight game of football between two teams who will not want to lose.
Sheffield United went and picked up a valuable away point at Bournemouth last weekend with a 1-1 draw, and that was a very close game. It picked up when Bournemouth scored and United had to attack, but on the whole chances were few and far between.
Crystal Palace played in a similarly tight game at home to Everton, one that ended 0-0. Palace struggled to mount any pressure in the game from an attacking sense until Everton went down to 10 men. However, they were still unable to score even when playing with a man advantage and they could well turn out to be low scorers this season.
Neither team will want to lose this one, The Blades would be happy to have two points from their first two games so will want to guard against a loss while Crystal Palace struggled going forward last weekend at home and are not going to be too adventurous on their travels here we don’t think.
This all points to a low scoring game on Sunday, with under 2.5 goals our pick in this one.
