Super Bowl 2019 - Betting Preview
Super Bowl LIII brings to an end what has been a thrilling NFL season and the playoffs have given us some of the best and most dramatic football we have seen in a long time. Just two teams remain, the New England Patriots and the Los Angeles Rams, and one of those teams will be taking home the Vince Lombardi Trophy on Sunday night.
The game brings together two fantastic offensive units, but it is the contrast between the two quarterbacks that has got the media talking. Tom Brady leads the New England Patriots and is already in the books as one of the greatest of all time. Even at the age of 41, Brady is still going strong and a win on Sunday would give him his 6th Super Bowl ring.
In contrast, at just 24 years old Jared Goff comes into the biggest game of his young career so far. He is one of many young quarterbacks in the league that genuinely believe they have what it takes to take over from Brady when he retires as the best in the league, can Goff show why he deserves that title on the biggest stage of them all? Patrick Mahomes is another young quarterback who had his shot at Brady two weeks ago and failed, Goff will want to do better.
The actual game is going to hinge a lot on Goff and his ability to handle the pressure and play his normal game. Playing Tom Brady is daunting during the regular season, but in the Super Bowl the pressure goes up to a whole new level. Add on top of that the fact that this is the very first time Goff himself has been in a Super Bowl, and there is a big weight on this young man’s shoulders. Can Goff cope with it, if he does the Rams have a fantastic chance, although you certainly wouldn’t blame him for freezing in the moment.
Super Bowl Betting Tips
As above, the game is likely to hinge on the play of Jared Goff and his mindset in the game. I’m backing him to have a successful night, handle the huge pressure on him and lead the LA Rams to victory. It is no surprise to see New England as the favourites with the experience they have, but this young Rams team is hungry for success and they have more quality on paper.
Those looking for a first touchdown scorer should put their trust in the fitness of Todd Gurley and back the LA running game to shine. Gurley played only a handful of snaps in the Conference Championship game in New Orleans, but he has had two weeks to recover and on his day he is the best running back in the league.
Those looking for something slightly different to bet on should look at the market for the first scoring play. If there is a moment when Goff will be vulnerable it is early in the game, so don’t be surprised to see him have a relatively quiet first quarter. As a complete opposite to that, expect Tom Brady to take things in his stride and start strongly in this game. He can lead the Pats down the field for points early and a New England field goal as the first scoring play looks to be good value here.
• LA Rams to lift the Super Bowl @ 23/20 (Black Type)
• Todd Gurley to score the first touchdown @ 11/2 (Betfred)
• First scoring play: New England field goal @ 10/3 (Betfred)
