The Importance of Betting with UKGC Licensed Bookies

The Importance of Betting with UKGC licensed bookmakers

There are many factors to consider when selecting a new betting site from the endless options available. Great odds, an attractive welcome offer, regular promotions, and dedicated customer service should all be on your wish list. However, before you consider any of those, you must first check that the site possesses a licence from the UK Gambling Commission.

The licencing of a site may not sound as exciting as an eye-catching free bet offer, but it is, without doubt, the single most important factor for all customers in the UK, and here, we will explain why.

What is the UK Gambling Commission?

The United Kingdom Gambling Commission (sometimes referred to as the Great Britain Gambling Commission) is the regulatory body which oversees all gambling in the UK. Wholly independent, the commission was formed as part of the 2005 UK Gambling Act and presides over gambling in Great Britain and Northern Ireland from its Birmingham base.

UK Gambling Commission Goals

The remit of the UKGC commission is wide-ranging but is built upon the following three goals:

  • Protect Customers
  • Ensure Gambling is Crime Free
  • Ensure Gambling is Fair and Open

What is a UKGC License?

Given the huge number of brick-and-mortar and online gambling firms currently operating in the UK market, the task facing the UKGC may appear difficult. The UKGC Licence system is an essential tool used to ensure only legitimate gambling firms operate in the UK. Any firm offering gambling products to UK players without a UKGC Licence is doing so illegally.

What Criteria Must a Gambling Company Meet to Obtain a UKGC Licence?

To obtain a licence from the UKGC, any firm with aspirations of operating in the UK market must prove the following:

  • The identity of the applicant and all associates
  • That they have processes in place to ensure trustworthiness, honesty, and integrity
  • They are financially capable of operating a gambling business
  • They have relevant experience, expertise, and qualifications to operate a gambling business
  • All criminal records of anyone associated with the application must be disclosed
  • All policies incorporate the UK Gambling Commission Legislation
  • They are set up to follow the three key licencing goals listed above
  • They conform with social responsibility requirements, i.e. protecting against underage gambling and criminal elements
  • Demonstrate a focus on responsible gambling via the inclusion of tools such as deposit limits, time-outs, self-exclusion, and links to resources supporting problem gambling
  • Prove that their site is secure and protects personal information, financial details, and funds via measures such as SSL encryption technology

How Much Does a UKGC License Cost?

The initial application costs a relatively small £370. However, the costs rise significantly if the licence is granted. The exact sum an operator pays is related to the Gross Gambling Yield of the firm – ranging from a minimum additional fee of £4,224 plus an annual renewal fee of £4,199 to an initial £91,686 and a renewal fee of a whopping £793,729. No small change, but the size of these fees serves as an additional measure to keep unscrupulous elements away from the UK Gambling scene.

Policing Doesn’t end with the Granting of a Licence

Whilst a crucial stage, the granting of a UKGC Licence is only the first step in the work of the UKGC. Having gained a licence, all firms are continually monitored by the commission, which may access financial, security, and operational records at their request.

If, at any time, an operator falls short of the required social, fairness, or security standards, they will be faced with severe punishment. In extreme instances, a breach can result in an operator having their licence revoked. More commonly, they will face a hefty fine in addition to providing proof that they have rectified the area in which they failed to meet the UKGC licence requirements.

Fines dished out to relatively well-known operators in recent years include £582,120 for anti-money laundering and social responsibility failures and £6 million for more serious anti-money laundering and social responsibility breaches in 2024.

It may be disconcerting that firms have continued to fall short. However, it should be noted that these offences are relatively rare. On a positive note, the work of the UKGC has ensured that any poor standards are noticed and dealt with. Rest assured, if a firm is found guilty, they will quickly fix the issue. After all, they are in the business of making money, not paying astronomical fines and potentially losing their licence.

Other Gaming Licences

The UKGC seal of approval is the key licence to look for if you are gambling in the UK. However, there are others available, including:

  • Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) - Set up in 2001, the MGA was a frontrunner in providing robust legislation to the online gambling scene. Its objectives include ensuring product integrity and protecting the vulnerable
  • Alderney Gambling Control Commission (AGCC) - Preceding the MGA by one year, this non-political body is well respected for its work in ensuring fairness and integrity
  • Curacao - On paper, the Curacao licensing objectives read well. A focus on responsible gambling and fairness is to be applauded. However, this is – by some distance – the easiest licence to obtain, with the application process lacking the rigour of the UK equivalent, in particular. For our money, this is among the weakest of the licences available

Where to find a sites Licencing Information

When navigating to any online betting site, the licencing information is almost always towards the foot of the home screen. Look out for the UK Gambling Commission logo and text along the lines of “….is licenced and regulated in Great Britain by the Gambling Commission”. This statement should be followed by a licencing number (all successful applicants receive a unique number).

If in any doubt, simply head to the official Gambling Commission Website and enter the name of the betting company to discover if they possess a UKGC licence.

The UKGC Licence – Don’t Bet Without It

The UKGC Licence is considered the global gold standard in gaming regulation. It is more difficult to get than any other and thoroughly covers the bases of safety, security, fairness, and legitimacy.

Choosing a site with a UKGC licence ensures that your online bookmaker protects your funds and data with the latest technology, only offers fair markets and independently tested gaming products, does its utmost to protect the vulnerable, employs anti-crime measures, and has the best interests of the player at heart via a focus on responsible gambling. Select a site without a UKGC licence, and you take the chance that some (or all) of these aspects may be absent. Why take the risk?

All of the above explains why we only feature sites with a UKGC licence here at newbettingoffers.co.uk. As you can see, many fully regulated, excellent operators are available - if a site doesn’t possess a UKGC licence, they aren’t worth your time.
